The Commercial Pivot: Evolving KenGen into a Pan-African Green Powerhouse

The appointment of Ronoh Kibet Charles marks an intentional shift in KenGen’s strategic posture, transitioning the state-owned utility from a domestic electricity generator into an aggressive commercial power exporter. With outgoing CEO Peter Njenga locking in record Sh10.48 billion annual net profits, Kibet’s mandate centers on monetizing surplus geothermal reserves and driving corporate business diversification.

KenGen’s structural competitive advantage rests on its world-class geothermal expertise developed in the Olkaria steam fields. By exporting drilling consultancy and project management across East Africa and Southern Africa, KenGen is transforming Kenyan engineering know-how into a major foreign currency earner.
