Kenya Railways launches SGR vehicle freight service

✦ Executive Briefing

Transport Infrastructure & Trade Logistics

📌 Key Takeaways

  • Dedicated SGR Auto-Carrier Rollout: Kenya Railways officially launched a specialized Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) vehicle freight service linking the Port of Mombasa to the Nairobi Inland Container Depot (ICD) and Naivasha.
  • 8-Hour Damage-Free Transit: Each specialized enclosed wagon carries six vehicles, slashing Mombasa-to-Nairobi transit times from over 24 hours by highway to roughly eight hours while eliminating road chips, mechanical wear, and transit accidents.
  • Commercial & Regional Scale: Launch partner Autobarn East Africa plans to rail-haul 700 vehicles monthly, while Kenya Railways is courting clearing agents serving Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, Tanzania, and the DRC.
  • Retail “Motorail” Option for Travellers: Private motorists and holidaymakers travelling between Nairobi, Naivasha, and Mombasa can now book return SGR freight slots for their personal cars, curbing fatigue-related highway crashes.

Transforming Northern Corridor Automotive Logistics

For decades, moving newly imported vehicles from the Port of Mombasa up the A109 highway to Nairobi and landlocked East African borders relied predominantly on single-drive trade-plate convoys or open road car-carriers—exposing high-value inventory to stone chips, fuel pilferage, high insurance premiums, and fatal highway collisions. By deploying specialized six-car SGR freight wagons capable of delivering consignments to the Nairobi Inland Container Depot in just eight hours, Kenya Railways has fundamentally upgraded automotive supply-chain economics.

As Managing Director Philip Mainga highlighted alongside inaugural partner Autobarn East Africa—which has committed to moving 700 units monthly—extending the service onward to the Naivasha Inland Container Depot positions the SGR to capture transit auto-freight bound for Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, and eastern DRC across our Business & Regional Trade corridor.

Direct Benefits for Diaspora Vehicle Importers & Domestic Tourism

For members of the Kenyan Diaspora Network—who represent one of the largest segments of individual and commercial motor vehicle importers through Mombasa—rail-hauling vehicles directly to Nairobi ICD guarantees zero-mileage, dent-free delivery from port berth to inland customs clearance.

Equally innovative is the consumer “motorail” offering for holidaymakers travelling between Nairobi, Naivasha, and the Kenyan Coast, allowing families to ride the Madaraka Express passenger train while their personal vehicles travel by SGR freight—a major boost for both domestic tourism and road safety across Kenya’s Transport Network.
